History of Torre Civica

The bell towers of Romanesque churches sometimes have the characteristic of being built as bodies adjacent to the sacred building, as free-standing structures resulting in real cylindrical towers (see Pisa) or with a square base (see Trani) soaring like their basilicas.

This architectural model has led some historians to identify the rectangular slab green sandstone base of this building next to the cathedral as the first level of the original and never finished bell tower of the cathedral of Troia.

In 1119 the cathedral, very close to the one we see today, had a very large square in front and the construction of a tower could very well be contemplated, to complement such a large space; in fact, the square was, only five centuries later, in 1605, occupied first by the construction of the convent and in addition by the church of the Benedictine nuns in 1724, today dedicated to the Addolorata, right in front of the cathedral.

The hypothesis of a detached tower evidently with a square base can also be supported by the fact that the cathedral saw the definitive construction of the bell tower only at the end of the 18th century when the chapel of the Assumption was built.
